Fix the Diaper Smell ?!?!
Bad Odors in your Cloth Diapers?
The odors coming from well loved or even practically brand new diapers is easily remedied with these few steps.
First off you want to make sure you are using the right detergents so that way it will not happen again!! So check out the Diaper Jungles safe detergent list here
Once you are well versed on which detergents are safe, wash your diapers on hot water only. That means no detergent, soap, or vinegar. Do this 3 times, and each time you wash make sure you dry in between. This method strips your diapers of all the detergents and build-up that are helping to keep the odors in your diapers. Another way to strip your diapers is to boil them for 5-10 minutes. This can obviously be a little burdensome. So, hot water 3 times will also do the trick.
Sunning your diapers regularly keeps the odors to a very minimum. All the while keeping your diapers nice and stain free. Hanging or laying them in the sun until dry will give you fresh smelling diapers.
Do not use bleach as this can ruin your diapers, covers, and any waterproof backing that may be in AIO's. Bleach may get smells out but will almost always make your diaper fall apart quickly.
Well what if my wool stinks?
There is hope for your wool also. You can wash your wool in dish soap about 3 times. This includes drying fully in between each washing. Using dish soap will strip your woolens of their lanolin. You will need to relanolize your wool after stripping them, so they will stay waterproof. Use the same hand wash methods that you would use when regularly washing your wool. Lay flat to dry.
Help! My Diaper Pail is awful!
While you can reduce the odors to a minimum, the fact is there are soiled diapers in this pail. Rose smelling pails may not always be, unless your baby is a rose fairy or banana pudding dumplin' ;)
About a half cup of baking soda at the bottom of each empty pail works wonders and is very inexpensive. Also keeping a dry pail will help with not letting the diapers brew in a messy stew of soiled cloth diapers. You can also add essential oils like orange oil or tea tree oils in with the baking soda. These oils are very good at eliminating odors. Using a pail liner can help keep the smell down by closing everytime you put in a new diaper, then adding the pail lid.
