Why Organic Mattress?

Most mattresses are made of PVC, polyester, foam. They are then doused with flame-retardant chemicals and PBDE's. These chemicals have been banned by the state of California but this is not to be implemented until 2008. What do you do until then? You can buy organic and guarantee that your baby will not be exposed to chemicals that are in regular store bought mattresses.

The line we carry, use only the Latex Green natural rubber cores. After many years of research, we have found that these cores are the most natural in existence. No artificial vanillin (petrochemical) and no fillers as found in Talalay natural rubber cores. No benzene, toluene, or pthalates as found in many other Dunlop processed natural rubber. We work hard to make sure the mattress is toxin free and even the most chemically sensitive can easily enjoy our mattress lines.

Our basics line is made from our natural rubber core and covered in a expertly quilted Pure Natural Wool and U.S. organic cotton batting surrounded by our super soft organic cotton outer for an attractive look and soft feel. Even our tape edge binding is organic cotton.

About the Rubber:

Our firm 100% Sri Lankan natural rubber (no fillers, no toluene like the Indian rubber, and no ash). See our rubber story. We take a 4.5" rubber core and wrap it in our unique quilted outer to create a 5.5-6" mattress. The higher the mattress, the less safe it is as your baby grows. We quilt together a layer of organic cotton fabric, organic batting, organically processed wool from organically raised sheep, and our attractive European organic cotton Pure-Rest fabric. By quilting all this together we can use more topping materials to give you longevity and provide a uniform supportive sleeping surface.

Our mattresses all exceed the highest California flame retardancy standards set into place in January 2005.

What is NOT in any of our mattresses:

Silica (flamebreaker^tm) contains dimethyl sulfate

Vanillin petroleum

Poly fibers from outsourcing carding of wool

Standards for NAOMI member manufacturers

1. Must be free of synthetic fabrics

2. No fabrics may be treated with any chemicals suspected of being toxic, even at low levels

3. All wool must be from sheep raised according to organic standards

4. Wool must be processed according to organic standards and be free of Polyester fibers. This requires that the wool is processed at a facility that does not process polyester

5. Any wool used must be tested for excessive arsenic or ANY lead

6. All inner, hidden fabrics and fibers, must be certified according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards)

7. All cotton batting used must be certified organic and processed according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards). Many facilities add chemicals to organic cotton batting such as boric acid

8. Any other natural fibers used must be certified organic (cotton, silk).

9. Fibers used must also be processed according to GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards), no chemical processing allowed

10. Any rubber used must be tested free of benzene, toluene, pthalates, SBR, petroleum additives, formaldehyde, arsenic, lead at under .001 ppm

11. Any glue used must be free of formaldehyde, phenolated compounds and must be disclosed

The only exceptions are: thread, metal springs, rubber as these have no certifications in the works anywhere in the world

These standards were developed after it was discovered that many manufacturers were not disclosing all ingredients used. They use Greenguard or Oeko Tex as their standard and these are not pure standards in the eyes of a consumer who desires a mattress that is free of toxic or unproven chemicals.

Secrets of the organic manufacturing industry.

1. In order to be certified organic, the item must be 95% organic, the other 5% can be chemical or other fibers.

2. Most companies do not test their raw materials for any toxins.

3. Many manufacurers believe that Oeko Tex is an organic standard. They use this as proof that their mattresses are chemical free. This is not correct.

4. Talalay does contain petroleum and artificial vanillin. This contains dimethyl sulfate and is considered toxic.

By following these standards we are trying to make it easier for consumers to choose either an organic mattress or a natural mattress. If a manufacturer cannot meet these standards, we would then call them a natural mattress manufacturer. If they meet or exceed these standards, they would be an organic mattress manufacturer. This standard protects consumers from end products that may not be as pure as the customer believes.
